KTET- All You Need to Know
Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test is an entrance examination for teaching Aspirants, conducted by The Government of Kerala. The Offline Examination is held annually to shortlist aspiring teachers and enhance the quality of education in schools. The Kerala State Education Board (KSEB) organizes the exam to recruit teachers at Primary classes (1-5 standard), upper primary classes (6-8 standard), and secondary classes (9-10 standard) in the state. This examination is based on the National Curriculum framework.
Below is a list of necessary details that you may want to be thorough with before applying for KTET.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test varies based on the category an individual is applying for. They have to meet one of the four criteria to become eligible to appear for the test.
Category I - Lower Primary Classes Teacher (Class I-V)
An individual holding a qualification certificate of the 2-year Teacher Training Course conducted by Board of Examination, Government of Kerala; 2-year diploma in elementary education by NCTE or with an equivalent degree will be eligible with a minimum of 45% in 12/10=2 or equivalent education qualification.
A candidate with a minimum of 50% marks in 12/10+2 and a degree in 4 years of Bachelors of Elementary Education ( B.El.Ed), 2 year- diploma in education or equal qualification can apply for Category-I.
Category II - Upper Primary Classes Teacher (Class VI-VIII)
An individual holding a 2-year diploma in Elementary Education/Trained Teachers’ Certificate (TTC) conducted by Board of Examination, Govt. of Kerala/13 or with an equivalent degree will be eligible with a minimum of 45% in B.A/B.Sc/B.Com degree or equivalent education qualification.
A candidate with a minimum of 50% marks in 12/10+2 and a degree in 4 years of Bachelors of Elementary Education ( B.El.Ed)/ 2 year- diploma in education (special education) or equal qualification can apply for Category-II.
Category III - High School Classes Teacher (IX-X)
A minimum of 45% marks in B.A/B.Sc/B.Com degree and B.Ed Degree in the concerned subject from any one of the universities in Kerala or with equally recognized universities.
A requirement of a minimum of 50% has to be met in M.Sc.Ed in the concerned subject in case of filling application for subjects like mathematics, chemistry, physics, botany, and zoology from any of the regional institutions affiliated by NCERT.
A minimum 50% M.Sc.Ed. in life sciences is required while applying for Botany and Zoology from any of the regional institutions affiliated with NCERT.
Category IV - High School Classes Teacher (IX-X)
Degree/Diploma/Certificate in teaching in any subject that is approved by/NCTE/ Universities/Government of Kerala/Board of Examination.
A qualification obtained for the positions of Arabic, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu Language Teachers (up to Upper Primary level), Specialist Teachers, and Physical Education teachers.
Reservation
There are no specific reservations set by the Government of Kerala for the KTET Examination but it has set different pass percentages for all the categories. Passing marks for categories is:
General - 60%
OBC/SC/ST - 55%
PH - 55%
How to apply?
Eligible candidates can apply for KTET by directly going to the ktet.kerala.gov.in website. KTET Registration is the first step to fill the forms for the examination, which can be done on their official website. A sum of INR 500 is charged for applying for the examination from General Category aspirants and INR 250 from SC/ST categories, which is collected via an online gateway. In case of any queries, multiple helpline numbers and help desk email ids are provided on their website to help you find an answer to your problems.
After the application is accepted and processed an Admit Card is generated which enables an individual to sit for the KTET examination. Admit cards need to be downloaded at the online portal as the hardcopy is not sent via post.
The pattern of the Examination
It has an MCQ-based questionnaire with a total of 150 questions. Each level is divided into parts varying on the syllabus and weightage allotted to each section as per the examination categories. One mark is awarded for each correct question and there is no negative marking.

The syllabus for each category of KTET varies as per the demand of the teaching section of a school.
KTET Syllabus for Category - I
One should focus more on classroom-oriented topics in relevance to the Primary classes from I-V.
Following topics should be studied in relevance to the age group 6 years - 11 years:
- Mathematics
- Environmental Studies
- Language I - Kannada/Tamil/Malayalam
- Language II - English/Arabic
- Child Development and Pedagogy
KTET Syllabus for Category - II
It is important to focus on the curriculum planned for the VI-VIII standard set by the Kerala state syllabus. While reading these topics make sure you read their extension topics recommended for higher classes, as they may be asked in questions.
Following topics should be studied in relevance to the age group 11 years - 15 years:
- Language I - Kannada/Tamil/Malayalam
- Language II - English/Arabic
- Child Development and Pedagogy
- Mathematics/Science/Social Studies for respective subject teachers and any one of the subjects for any other subject teacher.
KTET Syllabus for Category - III and IV
The questions in this category are directed from the curriculum of classes IX and X. They are majorly based on approaches to teaching and learning.
Following topics should be studied in relevance to the age group 13 years - 18 years:
- Subject-specific areas and topics
- Adolescent Psychology, Theories of teaching and learning aptitude
- Language - Kannada/Tamil/Malayalam/English
- Content or Pedagogy
