The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is a statutory body that takes care of technical education in India. This educational body works under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. AICTE manages the technical and management education in India and ensures every student gets access to the best educational infrastructure. This council was first established in November 1945 as an advisory body; however, it was given statutory status in 1987.

AICTE is assisted by ten other statutory boards of studies that make the work manageable for this educational body. These statutory boards are:

With the help of these boards, AICTE manages its work and makes education accessible to all. The main office of this educational board is situated in Delhi. It also has regional offices at multiple locations in India.

What is the role of AICTE in India?

AICTE approves new courses and extensions of educational infrastructure. For example, if an institute wants to upgrade its course or expand the existing institute, they need to take approval from AICTE.
The council also takes care of the establishment of new technical institutes. For example, if a new institute is being constructed for higher education like postgraduate, degree, or diploma courses, they need to get approval from AICTE.
The educational body also grants approval to an institute in case they want to change its existing location. Moreover, the educational body also grants approval to an institute if they apply for closure.
AICTE also takes care of other parameters like increasing or reducing the student intake and changes in courses.
The educational body also grants approval to the institutes that need to change their student intake or categories. For example, if an institute wants to convert a co-ed organization into a women’s institution they need approval from AICTE.

In addition, AICTE also offers technical knowledge to interested candidates. The educational body offers 49 online courses to students with the help of an e-learning system. These courses are available in bi-lingual content: Hindi and English.
