Bihar TET- All You Need to Know

Bihar School Education Board conducts Teacher Eligibility Test (BTET) to shortlist candidates that aspire to become teachers and to enhance the quality of education, and productivity in government schools specifically. The exam is conducted at two levels wherein Paper 1 qualifies teachers for Class I-V and Paper 2 qualifies teachers for class VI-VIII, qualifying these exams a candidate becomes eligible to apply for classes as per the paper cleared. This exam is conducted annually or as per the vacancies available.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for Bihar Teacher Eligibility Test varies based on the category an individual is applying for.

Nationality

The candidate should be a national citizen of India having a domicile certificate of Bihar. This criterion remains constant for both categories.

Age

The candidates are required to be in the age bracket of 21 to 35 years. Age relaxation for reserved categories such as SC/ST/OBC and female candidates is 5% as per the BTET recruitment policy.

Education Qualification

For Paper - 1 (Class I-V)

  • The candidate should be a 10th pass or equivalent with a minimum of 45%.
  • The candidate with B. A/B.Sc with 50% in B.Ed can apply for the paper.
  • The candidate in the final year of B.Ed or holding a 2-year diploma course degree in Elementary Education is eligible to apply.

For Paper - 2 (Class VI-VIII)

  • A candidate either in the final year or with a degree in B.Sc/B.A minimum of 45% can apply for this category.
  • Candidates who have cleared or are appearing in their Senior Secondary or B.Ed. need to have a minimum of 50% to be eligible to apply.
  • Candidates should have a minimum of 50% in their Bachelor in Elementary Education, B.Ed. B.Ed. (Special Education)/ B. A(Ed)/ B. Sc (Ed); B. Sc/B. A to apply for BTET Paper 2.

How to Apply?

Eligible candidates can go on their official website biharboardonline.bihar.gov.in to register themselves and appear for the exam. BTET Registration is the first step to filling in the forms for this examination which is done online. An application fee of INR 500 is charged from General Category candidates and INR 300 from PwD/SC/ST categories, which is collected via an online gateway. To assist the aspiring candidates, they have provided multiple contact details including email IDs and helpline numbers for the applicants.

After the successful submission of the application and fee, an Admit Card is generated which enables the applicant to appear for the BTET examination. Admit cards have to be downloaded through the online portal as the hardcopy is not sent via post and neither is it provided at the examination center.  

The Pattern of the Examination

It is an offline MCQ-based examination with a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The medium of the examination is Hindi. There are about 150 questions with 1 mark each on each paper. The passing percentage to clear the examination is 50% failing which a candidate will not be able to apply for teaching jobs in Bihar Government and government-aided schools. There is no negative marking in this examination.

Syllabus for the Examination

The syllabus for each category of BTET varies as per the category of the teaching section of a school.

BTET Syllabus for Paper - 1

The focus should be more on classroom-oriented topics concerning the Primary classes from I-V.

The following topics should be studied in relevance to the age group 6 years - 11 years:

  • Child Development
  • Mathematics
  • Environmental Studies
  • Language I - Hindi
  • Language II - English

BTET Syllabus for Paper - 2

The focus should be more on classroom-oriented topics concerning the Primary classes from I-V.

The following topics should be studied in relevance to the age group 11 years - 15 years:

  • Language I - Hindi
  • Language II - English
  • Child Development and Pedagogy
  • Mathematics/Science/Social Studies for respective subject teachers and compulsory subjects for any other subject teacher.
