“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”- Nelson Mandela
2022 marks the fourth year of celebrating the International Day of Education, the fourth year of progress and growth in the world of education. Exactly four years back on 24th January 2018, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as the day as International Day of Education. The world celebrates the day with different themes every year. Every theme represents a vision, mission, goal, and hope.
Theme of International Day of Education 2022
The theme for International Day of Education, 2022 is “Changing Course, Transforming Education”. The recent Futures of Education Report of UNESCO read, "transforming the future requires an urgent rebalancing of our relationships with each other, with nature as well as with technology that permeates our lives, bearing breakthrough opportunities while raising serious concerns for equity, inclusion, and democratic participation", therefore, the theme. A statement by UNESCO also reads "This year’s International Day of Education will be a platform to showcase the most important transformations that have to be nurtured to realize everyone’s fundamental right to education and build a more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful future. It will generate debate around how to strengthen education as a public endeavor and common good, how to steer the digital transformation, support teachers, safeguard the planet and unlock the potential in every person to contribute to collective well-being and our shared home."
Importance of Education for All
Education is the medium, tool, and power that provides individuals with the skills, techniques, information, and knowledge. These skills help them to understand, comprehend and fulfill their responsibilities towards the community, families, and country. On the occasion of the International Day of Education, here are a few reasons to consider education as the most important asset for any human being as well as a fundamental right.
1- To move towards empowerment- People sometimes suffer because of inadequate knowledge of their rights. For instance- the government rolls out many policies and schemes in order to help the poor people, remove poverty, and cater to their needs. However, due to insufficient knowledge and information, these people fail to make use of their rights or benefit from the schemes & policies. Therefore, it is crucial for everyone to have the basic knowledge and education in order to be empowered.
2- For being independent- Being independent in today's time is extremely important for everyone. Be it a man or a woman, financial independence gives freedom, confidence, and power to live their life on their own terms. In order to find a good and decent-paying job, it is important that the individuals are well educated for the role. Therefore, no matter how many extra miles one needs to walk to seek good education, they should walk it with pride.
3- To speak against the wrong- Right knowledge on a subject helps in coming up with a point of view of your own. An individual will only be able to speak against the wrong when they know enough about the topic and the details of it. Hence, no matter where you go and where you come from, what you say would only be noticed if you speak with the right knowledge.
This International Day of Education, let us all pledge to spread the word on the importance of education in our own way.
