Traits of an Ideal Teacher

Who is an ideal teacher? Rather, what makes an ideal teacher? There's always that one teacher who is loved by all the students. What makes these teachers special? To become an ideal teacher, in addition to subject knowledge and wisdom, one must have a certain set of skills. Empathy, patience, goal setting, leadership, and charisma to name a few.

Let us take a look at some of the major traits of an ideal teacher and how you can develop these qualities.

1.Effective Goal Setting

More often than not, teachers are in a hurry to finish the syllabus. The fear is valid and it is important to cover all the concepts in the syllabus. However, because of this fear, communication gets hindered and they don’t understand what the students are going through. An ideal teacher would be effective at goal setting and can identify gaps to communicate with students. While they stay on the trajectory and cover all the concepts, they also find time to listen to their students.

2.Empathy

Empathy is one of the most important traits of an ideal teacher. A classroom cannot be efficient unless and until the communication is two-way. Being empathetic is about understanding and feeling what the students are going through. This will help the teachers frame their teaching methods accordingly. Without being empathetic, teachers wouldn’t be able to understand the types of learners in the classroom and the strategies that would work the best.

3. Charisma

Ideal teachers have a natural charisma. It is an innate ability. They can charm their students with their wit, character, presentation, and the like. Having said that, charisma is something that anyone can work on. For instance, empathy is a quality that you can develop, being able to stand in someone else’s shoes will add to your charisma. All the traits are interconnected.

4. Flexibility

Teaching is a learning and unlearning process. An ideal teacher will be flexible. They are always ready to learn new things and accept criticism. They are not resistant to change and neither do they stick to one method forever. An ideal teacher must be a great learner and one cannot be a great learner without being flexible.

5.Growth- Mindset

Ideal teachers understand that there is always scope for growth. It is a crime to think that one cannot widen their skill set or improve their talent. There is always room for development. Ideal teachers keep working on themselves and improve their skills. They try new strategies and techniques that can help students. They also instill this idea in their students. It is rightly said that education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire. Teachers cannot ignite the fire in students unless and until they believe in themselves and guide the students.

Ideal teachers are essential for student development and academic success. If you want to be a good teacher, you need to demonstrate strong communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and organization skills in addition to the traits that we discussed above. Wishing you the best career as a teacher.
