Secondary Education Commission

The Indian government appointed the Secondary Education Commission, often known as the Mudaliar Commission, in accordance with a resolution to improve the country's educational landscape. The Hon’ble VC of the University of Madras, Dr A. Lakshmanswami Mudaliar, served as the Commission's chair.

It is quite important to examine when a child should start their secondary school as well as how long they should stay. It is now widely acknowledged that secondary school lasts until the age of around 17 years. A well-planned education that lasts for around 7 years should allow the school to provide a thorough education in the courses the student is pursuing as well as assist him/her in achieving a respectable level of maturity in knowledge, understanding, and judgment that would serve him/her well in life.

Aims and Objectives

  1. To create perfect citizens

The SEC has realised that social and national feelings are necessary for a country to advance. As a result, it has been established that the purpose of secondary school is to create these citizens filled with an impactful national as well as the social sentiment. They must be prepared to fulfil their obligations and make whatever necessary sacrifices for the benefit of their country. Such folks ought to have a sense of brotherhood that everybody shares. The Commission separated the description of the nationalist feeling into three sections:

  • The Commission has clarified the concept of national sentiment. It has been urged that the students of the country should have faith in the greatness and importance of the culture of their country.
  • The Commission advises the student to conduct a self-study and assess his own good and negative traits in an effort to develop a more positive outlook on life.
  • The Commission has highlighted that one should be willing to make any sacrifice for the country.

2. To increase one's ability to earn money
The Commission believes that after completing secondary education, a person should be able to earn enough money to support themselves. Vocational subjects should be added to the curriculum to help develop this capability.

3. Leadership capability
Students' leadership skills should be developed in secondary education. For the purpose of democracy and the overall growth of the nation, this trait is essential.

4. To foster moral character
Humans are social creatures. He must possess the spirit of cooperation, self-control, humility, love, and brotherhood. The curriculum needs to include lessons that can help children develop these virtues. Science, humanities, fine arts, music, and dance are some of the subjects.

5. To enhance vocational efficiency

The Commission believed that increasing the vocational efficiency of students by having them engage in productive labor makes self-sufficiency and national prosperity possible.

6. To foster personality development

The secondary curriculum should be tailored to foster the students' creative energies so they may appreciate their cultural heritage and build strong interests in music, dance, drama, and crafts.

The building blocks of the Commission's curriculum

The following points are included in the secondary education Commission's basic curriculum construction principles:

  • The entirety of the experience is when students engage in a variety of activities in the classroom, playground, library, workshops, etc., in addition to their academic experiences.
  • According to the Commission, a flexible curriculum that can be tied to the student's interests, needs, and life is supported by the principles of diversity and elasticity.
  • The curriculum should be able to prepare pupils for both work and leisure activities.
  • The correlation principle states that curriculum topics should be related to one another. The topics covered should be applicable to everyday life. They shouldn't be specific pieces of knowledge.
  • According to the community-centeredness principle, the curriculum must be connected to community life.

Recommendations on teaching techniques

  • Students should have the opportunity to practice clear thinking and expression in both speech and writing during class.
  • Activities should be used in teaching.
  • The needs of each student should be considered in the classroom.
  • It should instill positive beliefs and behavior.
  • Experimental and demonstrative techniques should receive more attention.

Conclusion

The Mudaliar Commission's proposals focused on the primary demands of the current situation and called for sweeping changes to secondary education. The suggestions for developing human traits, increasing practical and vocational effectiveness through education, and character development in the context of the new social order are noteworthy and deserving of appreciation.
