The world as we know it is constantly evolving. Education, for instance, has taken a significant leap forward. Modern education is more learner-centered with interactive teaching strategies such as critical thinking, participatory decision-making, value-based learning, and multi-method approaches, all of which diverge from the traditional types of teaching practices.
The modern way of teaching is more student-centered and this helps the students to be more creative, develop essential life skills, be competent, and likewise.
Teaching styles and the types of teaching have changed over the years. The styles of teaching that are practiced now acknowledge the importance of the learner and goes beyond the textbooks and classroom.
It is important to discuss the three D’s when it comes to the types of teaching. Namely, Delegate, Discuss, and Direct. Teaching is usually one or a combination of these three types.
Let us take a look at these styles of teaching in detail.
Types of Teaching
Students have to develop imaginative solutions to problems, they need to be guided when they are lost and they should also develop skills so that they can face anything that comes their way. All this should be taken into consideration when teachers adopt a teaching style. Here are the three major types of teaching:
1.Direct
In this type of teaching, the teacher presents the student with information about the concept and there is not much participation involved. As the name suggests, the teacher directs the journey and the students follow it. The teacher merely reads out the textbook or talks about the concept. The students attain information by listening to these lectures, noting down information, and likewise. It is not the best way of teaching but becomes inevitable in certain scenarios. The teachers should ensure to frame the content in such a way that it is crisp and clear.
2.Discuss
The discussing style is more dependent on interactions and dialogues. The teachers act as a moderator in this types of teaching and encourage students to participate in the classroom. This promotes active listening, helps develop creative thinking, and likewise. The teachers should make sure that every student gets an equal opportunity to be a part of the discussion and that they are not sidelined by other dominant students. It is important to keep the classroom space democratic while following the discussing style of teaching. The teachers can prepare questions or topics in prior and this will make the discussions more fruitful.
3.Delegate
In this type of teaching, the teachers delegate the students with tasks and activities and the students learn the concept as a result of doing the task or project assigned. For example, the students might be asked to plant a green gram seed and observe its growth for a period of 15 days and record the same. The students will understand the growth cycle, the necessary things that a seed needs to grow, and likewise by doing this project. Teachers can also divide topics and ask students to conduct seminars to ease in the concepts to students. This method of teaching makes the students independent and empowers them.
Teachers need to understand that there are different types of learners. In order to address these learners, it is necessary to incorporate different teaching methods and strategies in the classroom. The best way is to use a variety of teaching methods and strategies. Ensure to use the right mix so that all students would benefit from the same.
We cannot say that one teaching style is better than the other. While the delegation style empowers the students the discuss style helps teachers listen to what the students have got to say. The direction method will help students when they are clueless. The best way is to mix the methods and use it wisely.
Everything boils down to making the teaching-learning process effective and efficient. At the end of the day, it is not about how much of the syllabus you covered, it is about how much the students are taking home.
